One Killed When Semi-Truck Collides With Sedan on Highway in Galt

According to a report from Fox 40, one person was killed when a semi-truck hit a passenger car in Galt, California. The tragic crash is still under investigation. In this article, our Galt truck accident lawyer discusses what we know about the crash, highlights the risks posed by large commercial trucks, and explains your rights if you are involved in a collision in California.

Large Truck Was Unable to Stop When Vehicle Traversed Highway Interchange

A collision occurred between a semi-truck and a sedan on Highway 99 in Galt, California. Unfortunately, the crash resulted in one fatality. A preliminary investigation revealed that the accident occurred near C Street, in the central part of the city. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), officers believe that the collision occurred when the passenger car entered the highway in front of the semi-truck. The truck was not able to stop in time. The driver of the passenger car was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Semi-Truck Accidents Cause a Disproportionate Share of Catastrophic Injuries

Semi-truck accidents account for a disproportionate share of catastrophic injuries on the road due to their immense size and weight. These vehicles can weigh up to 80,000 pounds—which is dramatically larger than even the largest of passenger vehicles. Some of the most common serious injuries reported in semi-truck accidents include:

  • Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs);
  • Broken bones;
  • Amputations;
  • Internal organ injuries; and
  • Spinal cord damage.

Notably, people outside of the commercial truck are often the ones seriously injured or killed in these crashes. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reports that nearly 70 percent of people killed in commercial truck accidents are occupants of passenger cars. Another 15 percent of victims are motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians.
