Police in Palm Desert, California is investigating a big rig operator for charges of reckless driving after he collided with an overturned vehicle at a crash site along Interstate 10 earlier this month.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), officers initially responded to reports of an overturned vehicle along the freeway. Upon arrival, the officers realized the victim, who was alive, was trapped. Following protocol, officers blocked off the crash site to allow emergency services to free the victim.
However, the accident turned fatal when a big rig truck collided with the overturned vehicle, with the victim still inside. According to initial estimates, the truck was believed to have been traveling at roughly 50 mph when it struck the Jetta, sending it flying some 100 yards.
The victim was then pronounced dead at the scene. Though the truck driver maintains he saw no warning signs of an accident, police have confirmed that the roadway was clearly marked, and traffic had been controlled and flowing smoothly prior to the collision.
When large trucks collide with other vehicles, there is a significant risk for severe injury or, in this case from Palm Desert, death. Unfortunately, these types of auto accidents are not uncommon, especially along busy roadways in and around cities, like Sacramento.
Truck Accidents in California
Truck accidents are not your average road accident. In addition to dealing with significantly larger vehicles, trucking companies and their drivers are subject to strict safety regulations with respect to training programs, vehicle maintenance and drive time.
When drivers or companies fail to adhere to such guidelines, it increases the risk that an accident involving significant personal injury can happen. Those involved in truck accidents may experience injuries, such as:
- Spinal injuries
- Soft tissue injuries
- Bone fractures
- Head or brain injuries
In many cases, the symptoms of injury are not always obvious at the time of the accident. That’s why it’s so important that those involved in auto accidents seek medical attention – to determine the extent of any possible injuries and recommend a course for rehabilitation.
Once a medical professional has diagnosed an injury, the next step in the process needs to be contacting a qualified attorney, who can assist with the filing and pursuit of a personal injury claim.
