Dog Owner Facing Charges after Great Danes Maul Four Children

A dog owner in El Paso County, Colorado was charged with unlawful ownership of dangerous dogs after three of his Great Danes allegedly mauled four young children.

According to the El Paso County Sheriff, the attack occurred after a woman, who has not been identified, brought her children to her boss’ home. Her boss, Mike Ingersoll, owns a dog-breeding organization called Rare Danes. The woman told police that she was checking on animals in the barn when she heard screaming and found four of her children had been attacked.

Three of the victims required surgery for their injuries, while the fourth suffered multiple injuries around the torso and head.

Though no cause for the attack was immediately known, a spokesperson for the Human Society informed local media that the three dogs would likely be euthanized.

Though many believe dog bite incidents to be uncommon, the truth is that they affect many Americans every year. In the state of California, dog bites continue to be a common form of personal injury, including in communities like Sacramento, Calaveras County, and Amador County.

Dog Bite Accidents in California

Across the country every year, roughly 800,000 dog bite incidents result in some sort of medical care being required. Even worse – they occur in some of the most familiar environments. For example, did you know that the vast majority of dog bites that result in death – nearly 60 percent – involve unrestrained dogs on the owner’s property?

Although not all dog bite injuries are the same – some may only result in minor cuts, bruises, etc. – the truth is that these types of injuries can potentially be incredibly severe or carry long-term consequences.

Such consequences are not limited to physical injury or disability. In addition to physical damage, it is not uncommon for victims of dog bites to also deal with mental or emotional trauma in the wake of an attack, such as anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder.

Because there is no way to entirely prevent dog bite accidents, it is important for individuals to exercise caution around animals, especially those that are unfamiliar or who may have a history of aggression.
